On August 1, Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, will attend the opening of the monument to Lesia Ukrainka restored with the assistance of his Fund "Ridna Kraina."

 

Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, will attend the opening of the restored monument to Lesia Ukrainka at Baikove cemetery in Kyiv. Members of the Institute of Literature, Prosvita society, the National Union of Regional Ethnographers of Ukraine, the Public Lesia Ukrainka Library, and other invitees will attend the event.

 

On August 1, Ukraine celebrates the 140th anniversary of birth of Lesia Ukrainka and 100th anniversary of her fairy drama "Lisova Pisnia." An act of vandalism was committed at the grave of Lesia Ukrainka at Baikove cemetery in Kyiv last year. The monument erected in 1939 is a significant site of history and culture.

 

At the public memorial service on July 30, 2010, the Museum of Lesia Ukrainka, Mykola Lysenko, Panas Saksahanskyi, and Mykhailo Starytskyi, Prominent Figures of Ukrainian Culture called for donating or contributing to the restoration of the damaged monument.

 

Mykola Tomenko´s Fund "Ridna Kraina" sponsored materials and works for the restoration.

 

Memorial service starts at 12.00 at Baikove cemetery.
