During the Eighth Session, the Committee on the National Security and Defense focused on Legislative Support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other Security Units, and Strengthening of Social Security of Military Servicemen and their Family Members

At nine committee meetings, the committee members scrutinized 43 issues and processed 15 bills. Ten laws submitted by the committee were adopted. Two laws were adopted in the first reading. The committee issued 19 opinions concerning the bills in competence of other committees.

 

During April 2010-February 2011, the committee addressed Prime Minister of Ukraine M.Azarov on the problematic issues 21 times. The committee received two responses signed by the Prime Minister; other responses were relegated from the ministries.  

 

The committee members held personal receptions of the citizens.

 

During the eighth session, the committee received 468 appeals, letters and complaints. The appeals concern housing provision of military servicemen and their family members who are on the housing waiting list at the local self-government bodies, inadequate pension provision and medical care of the war veterans, denial in free medical assistance, privileges and free supply of medical drugs.   

 

During the eighth session, the committee met the representatives of the Royal College of Defence Studies of Great Britain; NATO delegation headed by the Director General of NATO International Military Headquarters; students of the National Defense University of Pakistan, ambassadors of the United States of America, Pakistan, Iran, Russian Federation, Romania, Hungary, and Great Britain. The parties discussed the current state and strategic perspectives of stability and security in Ukraine.  

 

The committee worked on the bills to strengthen legislative support of safeguards for the military servicemen and their family members: on amendments to several laws of Ukraine (re strengthening of social security of military servicemen and their family members) under Reg. No. №8523, and on amendments to clause 8 of the Law "On Pension Provision of Persons dismissed from Military Service, and other Persons" (re funding of pensions) under Reg. No. 8629.

 

The committee adjusted the following bills to the second reading: on amendments to the Law "On Pension Provision of Persons dismissed from Military Service, and other Persons" regarding rates of pensions in the event of loss of a breadwinner (Reg. No. 5108), and on amendments to the Law "On the State Border of Ukraine" (re consolidation of the legal status and regime of the contiguous zone of Ukraine) (Reg. No. 7407).
