On Thursday, on the Eve of the Science Day, Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, conferred the prizes and awards of The Verkhovna Rada on the scientists and young scholars for their substantial contribution to the innovational state development, significant scientific achievements, and fruitful educational activity.

 

V.Lytvyn drew attention to the powerful scientific capacity of Ukraine focused in the academic and sectoral institutes and higher education establishments. The Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine regretted that this potential is not always in high demand. He also admitted to the lack of financial support of science, especially social and humanitarian studies. However, V.Lytvyn stressed that the President of Ukraine and the Government realize the necessity of increasing budget expenses for science next year.

 

The Head of the Parliament informed that in comparison with the year 1991, the number of doctors and candidates of science involved in research and technical activity decreased by 8848 persons, although the total number of doctors and candidates of science is steadily growing.

The Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine called for determining the priority areas of state development together with the academic community. V.Lytvyn singled out education, science, public health, and agricultural sector. He supposes that universities should establish the standards of life.

 

37 talented young scholars received the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Prizes, while 41 scientists were conferred the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine awards.
