Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, met Marian Lupu, Chairman of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, acting President of the Republic of Moldova, in Saint-Petersburg on Monday.

 

V.Lytvyn congratulated M. Lupu on being elected the Chairman of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova. He declared that The Verkhovna Rada was closely watching political affairs in Moldova, and sincerely wishes political stability and overcoming of the constitutional crisis. "We are convinced that political elite of Moldova will shortly reach a compromise solution to elect the Head of State and guarantee democratic development of the country," he stated.  

 

The Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine admitted that inter-parliamentary bilateral dialogue has not been fully employed so far. However, he expects growth of the inter-parliamentary cooperation.  In particular, he focused on several pressing issues, which can be settled by legislators of Ukraine and Moldova. V.Lytvyn singled out boundary demarcation, recognition of right to ownership of facilities constructed in the territory of Ukraine and Moldova in Soviet times, and others.  

 

V.Lytvyn invited M. Lupu to make an official visit to Ukraine to give impetus to the bilateral relations. He stated that a new agreement on inter-parliamentary cooperation may be signed during the visit.  

 

The Parties called for developing the dialogue between the parliamentary committees and parliamentary groups of friendship.

 

M. Lupu called for fostering cooperation in the observance of rights of national minorities. "If there is no dialogue, the problems amass. We are ready to settle all debatable issues," he declared. Along these lines, the Chairman of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova suggested holding a trilateral meeting of the Ukrainian, Moldavian, and Romanian sides to tackle the pressing issues.  

 

V.Lytvyn promised to consider this initiative, as it will foster mutual understanding and cooperation.
