On Wednesday, Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, met Shukhrat Sultanov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to Ukraine.

 

V. Lytvyn emphasized, "Ukraine and Tajikistan should discuss a wide array of issues." "I am convinced that the forthcoming meeting of our Presidents shall facilitate close contacts in the spheres of mutual interest", he stated, adding that political relations shall be based on a strong economic foundation.

 

Mr. Ambassador declared that trade turnover between Ukraine and the Republic of Tajikistan totaled USD 120 million in 2009, while last year it reached USD 200 million, although the real capacity of the states is much bigger. Nevertheless, according to Mr. Sultanov, several common projects on hydropower engineering and mechanic engineering should improve the situation.

 

Both Parties consider the humanitarian sector to be utterly important for the bilateral relations. They discussed students´ exchange programs, opening of Kharkiv Polytechnic University branch in Tajikistan, celebration of Tajikistan culture days in Ukraine, and other matters.

 

Mr. Ambassador declared that the Parliament of Tajikistan is willing to strengthen cooperation with the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. He informed about the friendship group set up in the Parliament. "We are ready for a fruitful inter-parliamentary cooperation", stated Shukhrat Sultanov.

 

The Parties discussed an international aspect of bilateral relations. V. Lytvyn informed Mr. Ambassador on ‘the complicated yet predictable´ situation in the Ukrainian Parliament.

 

As reported, Mr. Shukhrat Sultanov is the first Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to Ukraine. Ukraine is going to open the Embassy in the Republic of Tajikistan in the nearest future.
