Mykola Tomenko: Attitude of the Authorities to the Ukrainian Children's Literature means their Attitude to the Ukrainian Language

Today, on the occasion of the International Mother Language Day, Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, met the personnel and the visitors of The National Library of Ukraine for Children.

 

During the meeting, M. Tomenko presented the educational projects of "Ridna Kraina" Fund and stated that investments into the promotion of Ukrainian language among children is among the fundamental goals in the sphere of Ukrainian language promotion. He is convinced that it should concern children´s books and audio/video projects first of all. M. Tomenko emphasized, "Attitude of the state towards education of children, especially, teenagers and elementary-school pupils, is shameful, to put it mildly."

 

As an example, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine mentioned the situation with the most popular children´s literature publishing house "Veselka." "Today, the publishing house has no governmental support, while the personnel of the publishing office is working at home, as there is no opportunity even to heat the premises", Mykola Tomenko informed.
