John Tefft: American party has a serious and responsible attitude
towards the building of a new
object "Shelter"
in Chornobyl Nuclear Power Station.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to Ukraine John Tefft made this statement, meeting Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Volodymyr Lytvyn.
The Parties discussed the situation with nuclear power stations in Japan caused by the earthquake, and expressed their hopes that the disaster similar to that of Chornobyl would never happen again.
V. Lytvyn reminded that the hearings "Present Situation and Topical Tasks to overcome Consequences of Chornobyl
Disaster" would be held at the Parliament that day. He stated that events in Japan "make the measures planned in Ukraine on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Chornobyl disaster even more topical."
