Mykola Tomenko: Even in 2011, a United Ukraine remains a Fond Hope

During the live program on the National Radio on Friday, Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, dwelled on the significance of the Reunion Acts, and commented on the preparations for the celebration of the Reunion Day. He stated that due to the ‘common efforts´ of the authorities and the opposition, the Ukrainians and the world know that the present Ukrainian State is far from the ideals of a united state that the founders of the Ukrainian People´s Republic and the Western Ukrainian People´s Republic used to dream of signing the Reunion Act on Sofia Square in Kyiv on January 22.

M. Tomenko explained that he had not meant the formal union of the Ukrainian lands as a part of the Ukrainian State. "We speak of the unity of the development strategy, common traditions and values supported by authorities and the opposition", he stated.

According to the Deputy Chairman, it is symbolic that only in Kyiv the unity will be discussed simultaneously on four main squares of the city. "It seems that if there had been more squares in the center of the capital, they would have been occupied by different political powers, as everyone has their own understanding of unity", the politicians stressed.

"Unfortunately, even in 2011, a united Ukraine remains a fond hope," M. Tomenko admitted.
