Mykola Tomenko: Activity of Mykhailo Drahomanov deserves State Recognition and Honouring in both Ukraine and Bulgaria

 

On Wednesday, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine passed the Resolution "On Celebration of the 170th Anniversary of Birth of Mykhailo Drahomanov, Prominent Ukrainian Writer, Publicist, Historian and Public Figure" that has been registered in the Parliament by the People´s Deputies M. Tomenko, V. Zubanov and V. Petrenko.

 

The resolution recommends the Government: to set up the organizational committee to prepare and organize the state celebration of the 170th anniversary of Mykhailo Drahomanov; to draft and adopt the action plan to celebrate the 170th anniversary of Mykhailo Drahomanov, providing the financial and material-technical support; to take necessary measures to repair the Hadiach Mykhailo Drahomanov Specialized School of I-III grade No2 before September 1, 2011; to modernize the streets named after Mykhailo Drahomanov, before September 30, 2011; to organize theatrical exhibitions dedicated to life and activity of Mykhailo Drahomanov; to facilitate publication of a complete collection of Mykhailo Drahomanov works and memoirs about him. The resolution also gives recommendations to the State Committee on Television and Radio Broadcasting.

 

Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, stressed that the year 2011 is an utterly important year, as several memorable dates will be celebrated. He reminded that the Parliament has already passed the Resolution "On Celebration of 140the Birth Anniversary of Prominent Ukrainian Poetess Lesia Ukrainka  (Larysa Petrivna Kosach-Kvitka)."

 

The Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine stated that Mykhailo Drahomanov is well-known in Bulgaria, so he is convinced that the 170th anniversary of birth of Mykhailo Drahomanov will be celebrated in both states. He announced that M. Drahomanov is famous for his public and scholarly activity in both Ukraine and Bulgaria. As it is known, M. Drahomanov lived and worked in Bulgaria as a professor in Sofia University, and his book collection was taken as a basis for the University library named after M. Drahomanov. He made a great contribution into the formation of education and science in Bulgaria. Mykhailo Drahomanov died and was buried in Bulgaria
