On Tuesday, Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, met Nguyen Minh Triet, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

In the beginning of the meeting, the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam declared that the countries had long-lasting relations that should be further developed. Mr Nguyen Minh Triet believes that the visit of the Ukrainian parliamentary delegation will boost bilateral liaison, becoming a new chapter in the history of the transnational friendship.

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine considers the ongoing visit as essential, since the interstate dialogue at the supreme level had been suspended for the past ten years due to the different circumstances. The Presidents of Vietnam and Ukraine met at the Millennium Summit within the plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly in September 2010, which "gave impetus to a new stage of the bilateral relations."

The President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam stated that the visit of President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych was highly anticipated in Vietnam. He also plans to make a visit to Ukraine in the nearest time.

Mr V.Lytvyn believes that active political dialogue proves the willingness of both states to foster cooperation in different branches. "The ties of friendship will be strengthened," he stressed.

The Head of the Parliament stated that Ukraine was interested in further trade-economic cooperation with Vietnam. He called for establishing collaboration in the knowledge-driven sectors.

Mr Nguyen Minh Triet declared that development of relations with Ukraine was among the foreign policy priorities of Vietnam. He stated that Vietnam was willing to cooperate in science and education, "as these are the strong points of Ukraine." "We are developing relations with different states, but we never forget our old friends," he stated, addressing Mr V.Lytvyn with a request to impart "the intention to develop relations with Ukraine" to the Ukrainian people.

Mr V.Lytvyn stated that the visit of the parliamentary delegation should give a spur to the extension of the legal support of the bilateral relations. The Ministries and departments are currently working upon the agreement on cooperation in standardization, metrology and conformity assessment between the State Committee of Ukraine for Technical Regulation and Consumer Policy and the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

The Parties are also scrutinizing the draft agreements on cooperation between the National Bank of Ukraine and the State Bank of Vietnam, and the draft framework agreement on cooperation in agriculture between the subject ministries of both states.

The Parties discussed the prospects of cooperation in the military-technical sector, power engineering, and culture.

To make the work fruitful, the Parties deem necessary to establish direct air communication between the countries. "We expect a positive resolution on this issue," Mr V.Lytvyn declared.

The Parties called for strengthening cooperation on the international platform, and coordinating the standpoints in the international organizations.

On 5-10 December, Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, stays with an official visit in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
