Commenting on the parliamentary scrutiny of the Decree on appointing Viktor Pshonka to the office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, stated that the majority of the Verkhovna Rada would obviously uphold it.

"First of all, it is evident that Viktor Pshonka is not merely from ‘a Donetsk group´, but also a person close to the President and his family. Thus, a Prosecutor General may work for the President, instead of protecting the legal order", M. Tomenko admitted.

The Deputy Chairman also declared that as the prosecutor of Donetsk region, V. Pshonka was known for the investigation of the case with the journalist I. Aleksandrov, "which became notorious not only in Donetsk region, but in the whole Ukraine, rendering a disreputable image to the law enforcement agencies of Ukraine." "Therefore, there is no hope for the unprejudiced investigation of high profile cases in Ukraine", he stated.

"Assessing the Decree and its support, I must admit that it does not change anything in the law enforcement system. The President got ‘his person´, while the politics continues to dominate the justice in Ukraine", M. Tomenko concluded.
