Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, calls for developing the Strategy of Relations with the Russian Federation on the Basis of National and Public Interests
Mr Lytvyn answered the question of the German journalists whether Ukraine faced the choice: to integrate into Europe or establish closer relations with Russia. Thus, he objected to contrasting these orientations, claiming no difference between them. "If we stir up discord with Russia, Europe will distance itself from us", he stressed.
"During the meetings in the scope of this visit, I was told that Europe is concerned with the predictable relations between Ukraine and Russia. When the negotiations between Russia and Germany, for example, last 12 hours, it is not treated as a crime of treason, but a search for mutually beneficial resolutions", the Head of the Parliament stressed.
Mr Lytvyn stated that Ukraine "should assume a stand in the negotiations with Russia." "Unfortunately, we lack this stand, focusing on random aspects of relations, while Russia has a clear-cut viewpoint as to cooperation with Ukraine and its aims", he stated.
"The fundamentals of our relations should be clearly set, meeting the public and national interests", Mr Lytvyn declared. "When the state leaders feel public support, then the negotiations with Russia will be based on the European principle of equality."
The Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine stated that foreign policy of Ukraine was aimed at European integration, which is unchangeable. "Young people support European principles and standards of life. We shall adopt decisions to be supported and realized by the young generation", he summed up.
