To the journalists and the staff of Ukrainian mass media
Dear journalists: news-agents, broadcasters, employees of radio and internet editions!
It goes without saying that on this holiday you are always reminded of the fact that journalism is not merely a profession. It is a call of heart, a response to which will forever deprive a person of a calm, carefree life. This person consciously opts for a way of permanent search for the truth, daily ardent creativity and continuous attempts to answer numerous complicated questions.
Journalism is often said to be ‘the first draft of history´ or ‘a slapdash literature.´ It is hardly possible to deny these definitions. You act as modern annalists, demonstrating mastery of the word even in running commentaries and newscasts. However, the most widely used synonym to journalism in ‘the forth estate.´ Sometimes, politicians are trying to shower the mass media staff with compliments, especially on this holiday, naming them even ‘the first estate.´ Still, I believe that it is not the number, which matters the most, but observance of the essence of any power - independence and responsibility. It is independence and responsibility of journalism that ensure democratic development of the country. Thus, mass media shall not flirt or fight, merging with other three braches of authority, but independently fulfill their main task to keep abreast of the time and bring the truth to the people. Only the truth.
Definitely, the freedom of speech in Ukraine has become one of the most important achievements of late. The State shall exert every effort to secure its inviolability, especially in the present-day situation. However, I must admit that is it a two-way street. The status of freedom of speech depends not only on the corresponding laws, but also on the journalists´ self-discipline. Journalists´ success presupposes the ability to gain confidence, first of all. However, authority and confidence are not given once and for all. You pass the test for credit by your every word, every television program, article or commentary. To prevent degradation of the journalism to the level of ‘a neatly organized gossip´ is an important mission of the Ukrainian journalists, worthy of their vocation.
Despite all the modern challenges, Ukrainian journalism has made a lodgement. I know that for sure, as it involves courageous, talented, hard-working and ardent people. Unfortunately, I do not have a possibility to shake hands with all those, who honoured me with their cooperation, whose materials I read or watch on TV, or those whom I will meet in the future. However, I wish free thoughts, colorful ideas, respect from the audience and inexhaustible source of health and inspiration to everyone students of journalism schools and distinguished media leaders, reporters of the national editions and editors of the local newspapers, celebrities of the television channels and golden voices of the radio.
May satisfaction from your occupational activity and confidence in its importance never abandon you!
