Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, calls for adopting the Resolution on Maintenance of Shevchenko Memorial Places in Cherkasy Region
"I suppose that the entire Cherkasy region should have a special status", V.Lytvyn stated on Wednesday in the interview to Ros Television and Radio Broadcasting Company, commenting upon the conferment of a special status to Kaniv town. "History is present in this blessed land, thoughts and deeds of prominent figures of Ukraine, forerunners of the development of entire Europe, are palpable here." "Suffice it to name Bohdan Khmelnytskyi who is often called Ukrainian Cromwell", he stated.
The Head of the Parliament reminded that having visited Shevchenko memorial places in 2002, he addressed the Head of State and the Government with a request to pass a corresponding resolution to maintain Chernecha mountain and other memorial places, turning them into "a mecca for every Ukrainian family and visitors of Ukraine."
"However, I must admit that the latest five years have been frittered away, and, what is more, by those people who swore in the name of Shevchenko on every occasion and quoted his works. Governmental funds have been misappropriated," V.Lytvyn stated.
V.Lytvyn believes that the president, the Parliament and the Government shall pass a resolution to maintain Shevchenko memorial places in Cherkasy region. He supposes that "the town of Kaniv should occupy the central position in this design." The plan of reconstruction and urban development "should be clear-cut and understandable, every region being involved into its realization." Moreover, it is important to develop infrastructure, roads and river communication.
"It should present the artifacts of Ukrainian culture, spirituality and art for the people to arrive here and learn about our history. It will also generate the revenue for the local budget," the Head of the Parliament stated.
V.Lytvyn expects that the leaders of Cherkasy region and Kaniv will prepare these motions in the nearest time, "adoption of the resolution provoking no objections." He promised to support this idea and facilitate its realization.
