Effective Legislation on Language Policy protects the Development of All Languages, including Russian, Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, is convinced

 

"I used to inform the local leaders on their rights and opportunities regarding language rules that regulate the activity of local self-government bodies and laws on language issues in Ukraine", V. Lytvyn declared on Friday in the interview to Rada television channel.

 

The Head of the Parliament reminded that the Law of Ukrainian SSR adopted in 1989 is effective and strictly defines the status of the Russian language as the language of international communication.

 

Asked by Rada TV channel about the adoption of the Laws protecting the rights of the Russian language that may cause confrontation in the society, V. Lytvyn assured that such initiatives need thorough analysis and harmonization with the effective legislation.

 

"As to the legitimacy of these legislative initiatives, when they are directed to the Parliament they shall be thoroughly analyzed and harmonized with the Constitution and conclusions of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine; afterwards the adequate decision shall be made", V. Lytvyn stated.

 

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine declared that language, freedom of conscience, religion and international relations issues "are rather sensitive and need surgical accuracy and sensible approach to their settlement, since they involve the most intimate and delicate heartstrings."
