The Committee on Public Health recommends that the Parliament adopts a Basis the Bill on Amendments to certain Laws of Ukraine regarding Notification about the Content of Genetically Modified Organisms

03 March 2010, 16:46

The Bill (Reg. No.6000-1) introduces amendments to Clause 38 of the Law "On Safety and Quality of Foodstuffs". Thus, the content or the absence of genetically modified organisms in the foodstuffs shall be notified by the label, provided the share of genetically modified organisms exceeds 0,9% of the total weight of the product in a unit of package.

The People´s Deputies believe that the Bill should envisage obligatory labeling of the foodstuffs containing GMO, while the label "no GMO" for all the foodstuffs is unnecessary.

The Bill (Reg. No. 6001-1) amends the Laws "On Safety and Quality of Foodstuffs" and "On Protection of Consumer Rights", canceling the obligatory label "no GMO" for all the foodstuffs.

According to the Committee members, this approach complies with the European standards of labeling foodstuffs with the content of GMO.

The Parliamentarians also briefed that in the course of the elaboration of the Bill for the second reading, it is necessary to take into the consideration the propositions of the similar Bill on Amendments to the Law of Ukraine "On Safety and Quality of Foodstuffs" (regarding notification about the content of genetically modified organisms) (Reg. No6001).
