Ivanna Klympush-Tsyntsadze, Chair of the Committee on Ukraine’s Integration into the European Union, and Vadym Halaichuk, First Deputy Chair of the Committee, are on a working visit to Madrid as part of the delegation of the United4Ukraine interparliamentary network. The visit is taking place with the support of the Ukraine2EU project.

The United4Ukraine network was established in 2022 to strengthen international parliamentary support for Ukraine. The purpose of the visit to Spain is to further mobilise political, military, and energy support for Ukraine, discuss further efforts and steps on the path towards European integration, as well as increase sanctions pressure on russia.

“We are working here to maximise support from Spain. We are grateful that Spain has consistently adhered to the fundamental principles of supporting Ukraine throughout this entire period,” said Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze.

During meetings with Spanish parliamentarians, Ivanna Klympush-Tsyntsadze focused on three key areas.

The first concerned Ukraine’s European integration, including a call to support the opening of new negotiation clusters with the European Union. The second focused on military assistance. In the Chair’s view, Spain could make use of newly available opportunities to help Ukraine defend itself more effectively. The third area concerned support for the energy sector.

“We endured an extremely difficult winter and russia’s attempts to destroy our energy infrastructure. At the same time, there are currently opportunities to invest in Ukraine’s energy grid and to help Ukraine restore its capacities in order to get through the next winter,” said Ivanna Klympush-Tsyntsadze.

She also noted that Spain could do more to support Ukraine not only at the national level, but also at the regional level. “We very much hope that our proposals will be heard by our partners, starting with the restoration of our thermal power generation facilities, as well as investments in other types of energy generation, so that Ukraine can not only endure and function effectively as a state, but also generate economic capacity and maintain its ability to fight the enemy,” the Chair added.

Among the key topics discussed was the upcoming 21st package of European Union sanctions against russia. The United4Ukraine delegation stressed the importance of maintaining sanctions pressure on the russian federation, particularly with regard to russian liquefied natural gas, the shadow fleet, and the nuclear energy sector.

Following the meetings, Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze and Vadym Halaichuk noted the high level of support for Ukraine in Spain.

“We received a clear understanding that Spanish parliamentarians support Ukraine and that this is not a subject of political debate in the Spanish Parliament. This is a unique example of support and cooperation. There are no major differences between the opposition and ruling parties on this issue, and this is extremely important for all of us,” emphasised the Chair of the Committee on Ukraine’s Integration into the EU.
