On 6 February, Oleksandr Merezhko, Chair of the Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation, met with Harris Georgiades, Chair of the Committee on Foreign and European Affairs of the House of Representatives (Parliament) of Cyprus and Head of the Cyprus-Ukraine Interparliamentary Friendship Group. The event was held via videoconference.
During the meeting, the interlocutors discussed the current security and humanitarian situation in Ukraine, support for the stability of our state in countering the armed aggression of the russian federation, in particular, increasing economic and military-technical assistance from partners, prospects for a ceasefire and the peace process, as well as sanctions policy against the aggressor state and the possibility of using frozen russian assets to restore destroyed infrastructure.
The committee chairs paid particular attention to discussing the development of our state's European integration, the participation of Ukrainian representatives in events within the framework of Cyprus' presidency of the Council of the European Union, the importance of implementing the necessary reforms for EU accession and the adaptation of Ukrainian legislation to EU law (acquis). Two high-level parliamentary events are planned for next month as part of Cyprus' presidency of the Council of the EU, namely: the Interparliamentary Conference on Common Foreign and Security Policy and Security and Defence Policy (CFSP/SDP) and the Parliamentary Conference of the Committees for European Affairs of the Parliaments of the Member States of the EU (COSAC).
Committee Chairman Oleksandr Merezhko expressed his gratitude to his Cypriot colleague for his comprehensive support of our country and stressed the importance of Ukraine's swift accession to the EU.
