The First Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Oleksandr Korniienko has taken part in a visiting session of Temporary Investigative Commission about strengthening social security for victims impacted by the accident on Chornobyl nuclear power plant and increasing control over the use of radiation-polluted territories.
The event took place in Korosten under the chairmanship of the Chair of the Committee on Foreign Policy and International Cooperation Arsenii Pushkarenko.
«As always, I participated in the work of Temporary Investigative Commission. Unfortunately, I cannot be a member of the Committee, but I constantly get involved and together with my colleagues take care of issues that have piled up over the years. Yes, there are a lot of topics for discussion, and Verkhovna Rada, the government and non-governmental organizations are collaborating to find the solutions,» said the First Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada.
According to him, during the session experts continued discussing dosimetric passportization of areas contaminated due to the Chornobyl accident. «The discussion goes on because there are several outstanding issues that are complicating the decision-making process. That is why I will hold a separate meeting to work out effective mechanisms for their resolvement,» informed Oleksandr Korniienko.
As stated by Arsenii Pushkarenko, nowadays 927 residential areas in Ukraine have the status of radiation-polluted. Last year the government inspected 203 of them, and in the budget for 2026 there are dedicated funds to conduct an investigation on 724 more residential areas that are yet unstudied.
«From the perspective of territory development, of course, the zones should be lifted: based on research results in the areas that have become clean the economic restrictions must be lifted. At the same time residents of those territories should keep receiving their social and pension guarantees, and we will ensure it by a separate law without dependence on status or zoning of residential areas. It is important that this draft law guarantees lifetime payments to those people whether there will be or will not be any zones,» he mentioned.
The participants of the session also focused on the issue of supplying free food for the children who are studying at educational institutions located in the polluted territories. The Minister of Education Oksen Lisovyi spoke on this occasion. «The assignment for the Ministry of Education and the Ministry for Social Policy is to assure the equalization of subsidies (можна ще payments),» emphasised the First vice-speaker.
Oleksandr Korniienko thanked colleagues involved in work of Temporary Investigative Commission and those who take part in making necessary decisions to assure social justice and protection of victims affected by the awful accident on Chornobyl NPP.
