The visit to Kyiv by Daiga Mieriņa, Speaker of the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia, was a sign of solidarity with Ukraine amid daily attacks by russia and pressure on the Ukrainian energy system.
The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Ruslan Stefanchuk, expressed his gratitude to Latvia for its consistent military, political and humanitarian support for Ukraine, noting that Latvia is one of the leaders in terms of the amount of aid to Ukraine as a percentage of its own GDP, a co-leader of the Drone Coalition and an active participant in the training, treatment and rehabilitation of Ukrainian military personnel.
Daiga Mieriņa emphasised that there is complete unity in the Latvian parliament regarding support for Ukraine. The Latvian delegation arrived in Kyiv to discuss directly what additional steps could be taken to strengthen assistance to Ukraine. She also noted the work of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in the difficult conditions of war as an important component of Ukraine's progress towards membership in the European Union.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the peace process, sanctions pressure on the aggressor, the use of frozen russian assets, Ukraine's European and Euro-Atlantic integration, and further support for the energy sector. Ruslan Stefanchuk stressed that a just and lasting peace is only possible if there are real security guarantees and continued pressure on russia.
He separately noted a symbolic gesture — the awarding of representatives of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine with honorary diplomas from the Speaker of the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia as a sign of respect and trust.
«Such meetings are always about specific decisions. Latvia has been and remains one of Ukraine's closest partners. Thank you very much for your consistency, integrity and solidarity,» Ruslan Stefanchuk emphasised.
