Ukraine remains one of the most heavily mined countries in the world, that is why the support of the partners is critical to restoring food security, according to the Committee on Agrarian and Land Policy.

Thus, according to FAO of the UN which together with Qatar Fund For Development signed a $10 million agreement to  support rural communities in Ukraine affected by mine hazards.

The program aimed to restore safe usage of agricultural lands, rebuild livelihoods and strengthen the resilience of farms in the most affected areas of southern and eastern Ukraine.

It is noted that the new programme, which FAO will implement together with the World Food Programme, will support more than 3,500 rural families and 100 small farmers in three frontline regions of Ukraine.

FAO will therefore focus on geospatial analysis, soil testing, land rehabilitation and production support, and will provide rural communities with vouchers for materials and equipment needed to resume activities on safe fields. WFP will be responsible for non-technical and technical surveys and land clearance operations.

The initiative also aims to strengthen national capacity by training young scientists and supporting local institutions, as well as disseminating best agricultural practices for land rehabilitation. These investments in human capital contribute to long-term national capacity building, providing Ukraine with a modern, future-proof system for soil rehabilitation and sustainable agricultural recovery.

The new programme continues the broad support that FAO has been providing to Ukraine's agricultural sector since 2022, including emergency assistance, coordination of mine action, land rehabilitation, and restoration of production and critical rural infrastructure. By addressing both the humanitarian and economic consequences of mine contamination, the programme strengthens the foundations for recovery and lays the groundwork for sustainable development in the affected regions.
