Parliamentarians and representatives of European states sent an open letter to the President of the European Commission, the President of the European Council and all European leaders calling for the transfer of reparations credit from frozen russian assets to Ukraine as soon as possible. This was announced by one of the signatories, Oleksandr Merezhko, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation.

The letter emphasises the need to swiftly grant Ukrainian authorities access to kremlin assets. It also stresses that the indecision of Western leaders and the delay in providing material assistance to Ukraine only encourages putin in his attempts to wipe Ukraine off the political map of the world. Only unwavering support from Europe and democratic countries can stand in the way of russian aggression.

«Europe cannot allow russia to buy time for its continued aggression by halting the decision-making among freedom-loving and rule of law-abiding countries,» is emphasised in the letter.

The authors of the letter note that the reparations loan will help strengthen Ukraine's defence capabilities, which, in turn, will save the lives of Ukrainians who face brutal russian attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure on a daily basis. The appeal pays particular attention to the role of this loan in bringing peace closer. The transfer of frozen russian assets will serve as leverage in negotiations with the kremlin and will also be used for the restoration and reconstruction of Ukraine.

«russian assets cannot be returned to the aggressor who will use them as material resources to continue to wage the war of aggression and to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity,» the signatories noted.

The letter was signed by more than 70 parliamentarians and representatives of European organisations, including heads of national parliaments, members of committees and the European Parliament, and Ukrainian MPs.
