The members of the Committee on Ukraine's Integration into the EU met with a delegation from the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs led by Christophe de Nijs, Director-General for Ukraine and European Policy.
The parties focused their discussion on support for Ukraine, the internal political situation, and the implementation of reforms in Ukraine.
The Chairwoman of the Committee on Ukraine's Integration into the EU, Ivanna Klympush-Tsyntsadze, noted that it is very important that Belgian colleagues visit Ukraine personally and also communicate with parliamentarians. She expressed gratitude to Belgium for its broad support of Ukraine. «It is crucial for us to know that we are not alone in our struggle and that we are supported by countries that share the values we have been fighting for since 2014,» she noted. Ivanna Klympush-Tsyntsadze underlined that the war waged by russia against Ukraine is not about land and territory. With this war, the aggressor is trying to disrupt the world order and wipe Ukraine off the map.
The Chairwoman of the Committee reminded that russia is already waging a hybrid war on the territory of the EU, trying to undermine it from the inside. She urged not to underestimate hybrid methods of warfare, as their consequences are devastating and dangerous. «We have a common task, regardless of how close or far we are from the border with russia, it is fighting against all of us, and we are on the front line of this struggle, and the situation here is very difficult,» said the Committee Chair.
She noted that the situation is extremely difficult not only on the front lines, but also in the economy. Ukraine depends on financial assistance from its partners. This assistance is aimed at ensuring the survival of the State. In addition, russia has changed its tactics, attacking a growing number of large enterprises that have no connection to the military sphere but provide budget income. Russia also continues to attack critical infrastructure, destroying more and more of it. «This is a tactic to eliminate the population of Ukraine, because in this way russia is trying to cause another wave of migration from Ukraine,» said the Committee Chair. «This is a tactic to eliminate the population of Ukraine, because in this way russia is trying to cause another wave of migration from Ukraine,» she said.
Ivanna Klympush-Tsyntsadze called on Belgium to work with other countries to ensure that russia would literally pay for its crimes by finding legal mechanisms to channel frozen russian assets to Ukraine. This would provide Ukraine with a stable source of funding for years to come.
Vadym Halaichuk, First Deputy Chairman of the Committee, also called on Belgium to help develop mechanisms to ensure that frozen Russian assets are directed to Ukraine’s benefit as soon as possible. Vadym Halayihuk noted that it is unacceptable to send a signal to autocratic regimes that, despite starting a war, they can still expect their assets to remain protected by the system. «The message to such regimes should be clear: you can count on protection only if you act as a responsible member of the international community. If you choose otherwise, you forfeit that protection,» Halaichuk stressed.
During the meeting, they discussed the internal political situation in Ukraine, in particular the corruption scandal. The Chairwoman of the Committee on Ukraine's Integration into the EU is convinced that investigations and further appropriate action by law enforcement agencies are needed to bring those responsible to justice.
Belgian officials noted that it is extremely important for Ukraine to show that it is committed to reforms and continues to implement them on its path to the EU.
