A delegation from the Slovak Parliament's Committee on European Affairs, led by Committee Chair Juraj Ferenčák, visited Ukraine for the first time at the invitation of Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze, Chair of the Committee on Ukraine's Integration into the EU.
The visit began with a joint commemoration of fallen soldiers with Ukrainian colleagues at the Wall of Remembrance of St. Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral.
On the first day of the visit, Slovak MPs met with First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Oleksandr Korniienko, members of the Committee on Ukraine's Integration into the EU, members of the Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation, as well as representatives of the Ukraine-Slovakia Interparliamentary Friendship Group.
During the meeting with members of the Committee on Ukraine's Integration into the EU, the parties discussed the fight against russian aggression, Ukraine's movement towards the European Union, the challenges associated with the opening of accession negotiations, as well as the reforms that Ukraine must carry out on its path to the EU. «We talked a lot about the war, about common threats, about how the challenges facing Ukraine are challenges for the entire European continent,» said Committee Chair Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze. «We are counting on Slovakia, understanding these challenges, to become more actively involved in supporting Ukraine.»
Slovak MPs expressed their support for Ukraine's European integration course. They assured that their country is interested in interaction and cooperation at the community level, as well as in helping Ukraine in the process of European integration, given their experience. They also discussed joint projects in which Slovakia could participate. «Their delegation consists of representatives of both the coalition and the opposition. The same is true of our committee. This genuine interparliamentary dialogue is very important for establishing our relations,» said Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze. According to her, the current visit is an important step towards warming and revitalising relations with the Slovak Republic: «We are delighted that this step has been taken and hope that interparliamentary ties will continue to develop on this basis.»
Together with members of the Committee on Ukraine's Integration into the EU, the Slovak delegation also visited the sites of russian missile and drone strikes in Kyiv. «They were very impressed by what they saw in the ruins and the human stories they heard. We believe that those who came here for the first time will continue to find additional arguments for their societies that this is a common war and why we need to force russia to make peace, rather than persuade it to engage in some kind of dialogue,» said the chair of the Committee on Ukraine's Integration. She noted that Slovak parliamentarians support Ukraine's desire to defend its territorial integrity and restore it within internationally recognised borders.
