The Ukrainian delegation has completed screening meetings with the European Commission in Brussels on negotiating Title 12, Food Safety, Veterinary and Phytosanitary Policy.

This week, the Ukrainian government delegation presented the status of approximation of food safety, veterinary and phytosanitary legislation to EU standards. The key areas discussed were animal health, official control, biological safety, human nutrition, food processing technologies, pesticides, plant health, GMOs and others.

Title 12 "Food Safety, Veterinary and Phytosanitary Policy" is one of the most difficult in the negotiation process, as it requires harmonisation with more than 2,000 acts of EU law.

The screening under Chapter 12 is part of the formal process of assessing the acquis communautaire of Ukrainian legislation under Cluster 5 Resources, Agriculture and Cohesion Policy, which also includes Chapters 11 Agriculture and Rural Development and 13 Fisheries and Aquaculture.

During the screening meetings, Ukrainian representatives provided detailed explanations on the implementation of legislation, administrative structures, official control, monitoring system, statistics and practical measures in each thematic area. The European Commission positively assessed the materials presented and noted the systematic and sustainable reforms in this area.

Cooperation with the European Commission, exchange of experience and expert support will help to achieve full compliance of Ukrainian legislation with EU requirements. Progress in this area will protect public health and build trust among consumers and trading partners.

Based on the results of the screening, a plan for further implementation of EU regulations into Ukrainian legislation will be developed, which will be the next step in the process of negotiating Ukraine's accession to the EU.
