The First Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Oleksandr Korniienko, made a working visit to Olevsk city, Zhytomyr region, with the participation of the Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation Arsenii Pushkarenko.
A working visit started with a session «The Hero's Policy», which was held at the Centre for Children and Youth Creativity. The event was attended by community leaders, volunteers and families of the victims. «The main aim is to hear the offers of the society and to discuss memorialization, how to preserve the memory of the fallen, in what form to honour our Heroes, how it should be presented, in particular, in the public space, in culture and through state and local initiatives,» said Oleksandr Korniienko.
He emphasized that it is very important to do it during the continuous dialogue, with the families of killed soldiers, communities, local government representatives, and veterans - to develop a common vision and prevent formalism in such a sensitive topic.
«It is our duty to always remember the deeds of Ukrainian Heroes and to honour their memory through the ages!», — the First Deputy Speaker said.
According to the First Deputy Speaker, the foundations and prerequisites are currently being laid to ensure that, in 30 or 50 years, Ukrainians will duly honor the memory of those who gave their lives for a free and independent state. «Regrettably, each day we bid farewell to the finest sons and daughters of Ukraine. Air raid alerts sound daily. Hostilities continue every day. We work tirelessly to secure the necessary decisions, particularly those that will lead to a just resolution of this tragic conflict,» he emphasized.
Oleksandr Korniienko also noted that legislative initiatives are already underway within the framework of the “Heroes’ Policy,” and efforts are being made to ensure their prompt adoption. According to him, it is important not only to update legislation but also to rethink state policy in the field of remembrance, ensuring it is not merely symbolic, but sincere, profound, and free from manipulation. «All steps must be taken in close consultation with the families of service members and veterans. At the same time, one of the key tasks is to integrate issues of commemoration and remembrance into the educational process at all levels. We are actively working in this direction,» he stated.
The First Deputy Speaker also cited examples of positive local initiatives — in particular, the daily tribute to the fallen with a minute of silence at 9:00 a.m.: «It is precisely these seemingly small but heartfelt practices that form the foundation of a national remembrance policy, which over time becomes an integral part of our identity.»
He also thanked the participants of the meetings and events for their joint work and active citizenship. «The eternal glory and honour of the Heroes depends on our actions now!» Oleksandr Korniienko concluded.
