The Bill (Reg. No.5050) submitted by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine determins basic principles as to placement, design and construction of a central storage facility for spent nuclear fuel discharged form VVER-type reactors of the domestic nuclear power stations. In particular it envisages placement of a central storage facility for spent nuclear fuel on the territory between former villages of Stara Krasnytsia, Butiakivka, Chystohalivka and Stepanka of Kyiv region that sustained radioactive contamination after Chornobyl disaster.
During the sitting of the Committee it was declared that according to the Power Strategy of Ukraine for the period till year2030 the formation of a central storage facility of spent nuclear fuel of VVER-440 and VVER-1000 types reactors of the domestic nuclear power stations. The members of the Committee drew attention to the advantages of the storage of spent nuclear fuel on the domestic territory instead of storing it beyond the territory of Ukraine with the prospective return of highly radioactive wastes.
The Members of the Committee upheld the Bill, as its adoption will facilitate implementation of the legislative decision regarding placement of a new nuclear installation of national importance.
The Committee forwarded its resolution to the committee in charge of Bill drafting, i.e. the Committee on Fuel and Energy Complex, Nuclear Policy and Nuclear Safety.
