On 20 August 2024, the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Korniienko took part in a meeting of heads of foreign diplomatic missions of Ukraine ‘Military Diplomacy: Resilience, Weapons, Victory’.
The working meeting was also attended by the Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Mykola Tochytskyi, as well as MP of Ukraine, Deputy Head of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation Arsenii Pushkarenko, MP of Ukraine, Member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation Olha Rudenko. The event was moderated by the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Iryna Borovets.
The participants of the meeting discussed plans and priorities of public diplomacy, in particular, strengthening parliamentary diplomacy with the countries of Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Asia. “The parliamentary dimension has expanded to the so-called Global South. On behalf of the President of Ukraine, I am personally in charge of strengthening cooperation with African countries,’ said Oleksandr Korniienko. “In the international arena, we use every opportunity to discuss Ukrainian issues with parliamentarians. Among the practical results are the participation of the non-Western world in the Global Peace Summit, the activation of the parliamentary line, including the creation of friendship groups with Ukraine, and visits to our country.’
Arsenii Pushkarenko, the Member of Parliament of Ukraine and Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation, noted the high role of interparliamentary diplomacy in building relations with other countries. He also highlighted the importance of establishing relations, in particular, with Latin American countries, involving the committees of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in this process. In her turn, Olha Rudenko, the Member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Member of the Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation, noted the complexity of diplomatic work with countries that have historical relations with russia.
The First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Korniienko thanked Ukraine's diplomatic representatives around the world for their powerful work. According to him, in the process of establishing and developing Ukraine's diplomatic relations with countries around the world, special attention should be paid to increasing the number of visits to Ukraine by representatives of other states, implementing Volodymyr Zelenskyi's Peace Formula, promoting food security in Ukraine and the world, developing additional steps to free Ukrainians from russian captivity and returning Ukrainian children forcibly deported by the aggressor state. “There are parliaments that want to formalise relations by creating friendship groups,” said Oleksandr Korniienko. “September-November will be an active period of inter-parliamentary cooperation. Diplomacy also helps to defeat russia.”
The First Deputy Speaker also noted the important role of the USAID RADA: Next Generation Programme in building parliamentary diplomacy.
Representatives of the diplomatic corps and parliamentarians exchanged views on certain problematic issues of working with the above-mentioned regions, including the search for new formats of bilateral and multilateral cooperation, and frankly discussed opportunities and challenges that should be given increased attention in the near future.
