"Zaporizka Sich" Historical and Cultural Complex will open at the Territory of "Khortytsia" Reserve on 10 October 2009

Mykola Tomenko, Vice-Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, one of the initiators of the action "Let us Restore Zaporizka Sich" informed about the opening of "Zaporizka Sich" Historical and Cultural Complex at the territory of "Khortytsia" reserve on Saturday, 10 October.

The idea of creating an architectural ensemble - a generalized image of the Cossack capital of XVI-XVIII centuries appeared in the 60´s of XX century.

The idea of creating "Zaporizka Sich" complex caught its second wind after Ukraine became independent. However, the funds required for the construction were allocated only in 10 years. On 14 October 2004, i.e. exactly 5 years ago, the ceremonial laying of foundation of the complex took place. The Government of Yulia Tymoshenko rendered the first financial support in the amount of UAH 5 million in 2005. "Zaporizhstal" metallurgical works covered the biggest part of expenses.

The last stage of the construction was launched on 19 June 2009 with an all-Ukrainian action "Let us Restore Zaporizka Sich" initiated by Mykola Tomenko, Vice-Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. The advertising campaign called on the public with a request to contribute to the construction of the Complex, making a phone call or sending an SMS.

Thousands of citizens from the whole country contributed to the noble pursuit, having collected nearly UAH 1 million.

"We expected that the construction would be completed and the main buildings of the complex would open on the occasion of the Feast of the Protecting Veil of the Mother of God, the Day of Ukrainian Cossacks celebrated on 14 October. Owing to the support of active and concerned citizens, our expectations came true", stated Mykola Tomenko, Vice-Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
