The First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Korniienko took part in the conference on the creation of the European Civilian Peace Corps – “The Future of Europe Passes Through Kyiv”.
“Many people would say that Ukraine’s path to the European family began with the Revolution of Dignity. Since then, Ukrainians have laid down their lives for independence, for freedom, for the right to choose their own path. Our struggle against the aggressor for our future continues,” the First Vice Speaker stressed at the beginning of the conference, adding that solidarity, assistance and understanding are very important for Ukraine. “It was from those times that Ukraine’s true European path began, the Revolution of Dignity demonstrated that we want to be part of Europe, that we want to fight and will do everything for this,” said Oleksandr Korniienko.
At the same time, he noted that Ukrainians are the nation that wants peace the most in Europe, but it must be a just peace, in accordance with the Peace Formula of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi.
“Any peace processes should start with the complete liberation of our territories from the russian invaders within the 1991 borders,” Oleksandr Korniienko stressed.
In addition, during the event, the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine stressed three important actions. First, the russian federation must return all prisoners of war. Secondly, it is important to implement a special tribunal to ensure that the aggressor country is not only held accountable, but also that the crimes are not repeated in the future. Third, it is necessary to improve global security and implement its reform. “The current security system, which is regulated by the decisions of the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly, obviously has flaws when a permanent member of the UN Security Council commits military aggression against a non-permanent member, a nuclear state against a non-nuclear state, using the veto, blocks any attempts to resolve this on the scale of the UN Security Council,” he said.
Speaking about Ukraine’s European integration path, the First Vice Speaker stressed that all the commitments given to Ukraine by the European Commission are being fulfilled.
“The title of the conference is very impressive. Indeed, the future of Europe passes through Kyiv. On our part, we can say that the future of Ukraine inherently passes through Europe and all the capitals of its member states,” said Oleksandr Korniienko, the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
