The First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Korniienko took part in the Hard Talk event “What does Ukraine’s path to the EU look like?”.

The participants discussed preparations for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, in particular, the implementation of political reforms and the assessment of the implementation of EU law into Ukrainian legislation.

First of all, Oleksandr Korniienko stressed that the role of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on the European integration path is one of the main ones, as evidenced by the experience of parliaments of other countries that have become members of the European Union.

“The decision to join the EU is a decision of the entire Ukrainian people. We have a goal to start the negotiation process to eventually become part of the European family. And we are moving towards this by working at different levels – everyone is in their place,” the First Vice Speaker emphasised.

He also noted that it is difficult to overestimate the work of the Parliament of Ukraine on this path: “We are setting it up to implement the EU acquis as effectively as possible.”

“At the same time, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has its own important work in negotiations – we hold political consultations with the European Parliament and its members to discuss the experience of integration of other countries,” said Oleksandr Korniienko.

The First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine said that joint work on the European Commission’s recommendations is underway, with consensus building and discussions aimed at a successful outcome that will be welcomed by all parties.

“There is a lot of work to be done, but we know what it is for – we are ready to meet all the challenges and move in the right direction. For the sake of Ukraine, people and the future,” Oleksandr Korniienko concluded.

For reference. The purpose of the event was to discuss the results of the assessment of the implementation of EU law into Ukrainian legislation, the implementation of political reforms, preparation for EU accession, and the role of European integration in the overall process of transformation and reconstruction of the country.

The event was supported by the Office of the Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration and the USAID Competitive Economy of Ukraine Programme.
