The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Ruslan Stefanchuk, stressed that an important meeting of the National Security and Defence Council had taken place. In particular, a number of decisions were made, including those related to strengthening responsibility for corruption in the justice system.

“Today, absolutely everyone agrees that an independent, effective, accessible and responsible judiciary is the government that society trusts,” said Ruslan Stefanchuk, noting that such phenomena as bribes and corruption must be eradicated forever, especially in the judiciary.

He noted that this is the demand of the society, the requirement of the European partners and the duty of the state to have a transparent judicial system.

At the same time, the Speaker of the Parliament of Ukraine said that as a result of the meeting, the NSDC appeals to the subjects of legislative initiative to consider the following legislative amendments to the Criminal Code of Ukraine in terms of strengthening criminal liability for corruption-related criminal offences in the justice sector, providing for a sentence of imprisonment for a term of 10 to 15 years with confiscation of property.

Also, the Laws of Ukraine “On the Judiciary and Status of Judges” and “On the High Council of Justice” provide for the HCJ to check all Supreme Court judges for possible disciplinary offences or gross or systematic neglect of judicial duties, confirm the legality of the sources of property origin; improve the procedure for electing Supreme Court judges to the Grand Chamber of the Supreme Court and introduce a mechanism for their recall by the assembly of judges of the respective cassation judges; and conduct, by decision of the HCJ, an inspection for possible corruption.

“These measures are aimed at strengthening responsibility for corruption. They are aimed at making this phenomenon simply non-existent,” said the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk in conclusion.
