Oleksandr Korniienko: Even in times of war, we are responsible for ensuring that not a single percentage of our democracy is affected

The First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Korniienko took part in the presentation of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Ukraine “Resilience, Recovery and Rebuilding” for 2023-2026.

In particular, the First Vice-Speaker joined the third session of the event “Democracy”, where participants discussed such issues as strengthening democratic governance, elections and referendums, the role of civil society in these democratic processes, education and professional development of educators, as well as strengthening youth policy and youth participation.

Oleksandr Korniienko stressed that the Council of Europe Action Plan is an important document aimed at finding solutions to the main challenges facing Ukraine and Ukrainian democracy today.

At the same time, the First Deputy Chairman of the Parliament of Ukraine called on international partners to support concrete steps towards the implementation of plans for the restoration and reconstruction of Ukraine, in particular, in the areas of major challenges. For example, in the issue of post-war elections: “After all, even during a full-scale war, we are responsible for ensuring that not a single percentage of our democracy is affected.”

In conclusion, Oleksandr Korniienko expressed his gratitude to the Council of Europe for its readiness to support Ukraine in the part of the Action Plan aimed at democracy and governance.

For reference. The Council of Europe’s Action Plan for Ukraine for 2023-2026 “Resilience, Recovery and Rebuilding” addresses the country’s immediate and medium-term needs in the areas which the Council of Europe has expertise in.

The document has been developed on the basis of a structured dialogue with the Ukrainian authorities and other relevant actors. It aims to strengthen the resilience, recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine in the areas of human rights, rule of law and democracy, in line with the guiding principles of the recovery process in Ukraine (the Lugano Principles).
