The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk met with President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou
At the beginning of the meeting, the Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament expressed his deep gratitude to Mrs. President for her visit to Ukraine, which is going through difficult times, and noted that such a step once again emphasizes the solidarity of Greece and the great Greek people with the Ukrainian people.
He thanked for the steady support provided by Greece to Ukraine in its struggle against the aggressor, especially in the military and humanitarian spheres, and the adoption of important decisions for Ukraine on its European integration path, in particular the candidacy for the European Union.
“This is an extremely great assistance, solidarity and important political decision for us. We hope for the same active position of Greece in the future, which will accelerate Ukraine’s path to the EU and NATO,” Ruslan Stefanchuk stressed.
In addition, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine called on the representatives of Greece to join the initiatives of Ukraine on the establishment of a special tribunal for russia, recognition of criminal actions of russia in Ukraine as genocide of the Ukrainian people and recognition of russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.
“Today russia is waging war not against the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but against peaceful people. Therefore, the issue of justice is very important for us. And a fair sentence is a prevention for the future,” Ruslan Stefanchuk said.
He also conveyed greetings and gratitude to his colleague, the Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament Kostas Tasoulas, for his participation in the First Parliamentary Summit of the Crimean Platform and expressed hope for further strengthening of the inter-parliamentary dimension of relations between the two countries.
In her turn, President of the Hellenic Republic Mrs. Katerina Sakellaropoulou expressed admiration for the courage of the Ukrainian people, including the Parliament of Ukraine, which continues to work in the difficult conditions of war.
She emphasized that Greece has been supporting Ukraine since the first days of the full-scale russian invasion, as Ukraine defends not only its own, but also European values.
“The situation provoked by the war is not only about the protection of such basic things as territorial integrity. For the first time since the Second World War, the territorial integrity of a country is being questioned in Europe. And this is unacceptable,” said Katerina Sakellaropoulou.
She said that she had visited Kyiv region – the towns of Bucha, Irpin, Borodyanka, where she saw with her own eyes what horrors the Ukrainian people had experienced.
“What I saw allows me to say that Greece will do everything possible to help to punish those who committed criminal acts and they will be held accountable. This may be the Hague or other institutions created for this purpose,” the President of Greece assured the Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament of her support.
She also expressed deep respect for the courage and skills of the Ukrainian army, which is fighting today on the front line against a powerful enemy.
“As for your membership in NATO, I would like to emphasize that Ukrainians have proved on the battlefield that they are excellent warriors and deserve membership in this organization due to their bravery,” said Kateryna Sakellaropoulou.
