First Deputy Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Korniyenko: Ukraine has long been implementing the norms of the Istanbul Convention on Combating Violence

During his working visit, First Deputy Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Korniyenko opened a shelter center for victims of domestic and gender-based violence in the Berezivka Rural Territorial Community in the Zhytomyr Region.

First, Oleksandr Korniyenko stressed that no matter how difficult the conditions during the war are, "it is important to provide social services and care for people, and pay attention to such areas as combating domestic violence and helping victims."

According to the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, russia's war against Ukraine has once again shown that respect for human rights is fundamental, as is defending people's interests and helping those who have experienced horrific events.

Oleksandr Korniyenko added that this week the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine made a historic decision – ratified the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence.

 "In fact, Ukraine has long been implementing the norms of the Istanbul Convention on Combating Violence," said Oleksandr Korniyenko, adding that the center he is opening today has been a part of a network of specialized support services from 2021.

The First Lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska, initiated the establishment of a support institution network for victims of domestic violence. Therefore, from now on, victims of domestic violence will be able to receive free temporary asylum.

The victims can stay in the shelter for three months. If necessary, the period of residence can be extended up to six months.

In particular, among the areas of work and assistance in the shelter: psychological, social, social, medical, informational and legal services.
