Committee on Public Health recommends that the Parliament adopts as a Basis Bill on Amendments to the Law "On Safety and Quality of Foodstuffs" (re the Informing of the Citizens on the Presence of Genetic Modified Organisms in Foodstuffs)

The Bill (Reg.№4437) envisages the implementation on the legislative level of the requirements to the marking of foodstuffs containing genetic modified organisms or produced with their use.

During the discussion it was mentioned that today the foodstuffs with GMO marking matters are regulated by the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers that comes into force from the 1st of July 2009.

It was stressed that the implementation of the mentioned demands on the legislative level is essential for the provision of the consumers´ right on the reliable and full information concerning the quality of the foodstuffs.

According to the Members of the Committee the Bill should be added with the requirements concerning the quantitative contents of GMO in goods as it was implemented in other countries (European Union, Russian Federation etc).

The People´s Deputies suggested that the part one of the article 38 of the Law is added by new item 10: "presence in foodstuffs genetic modified organisms (GMO) more than 0,9% is indicated on the label of foodstuffs with the inscription "with GMO".

The attention was pointed out that not only foodstuffs may contain GMO but other production as well: plants protecting means, cosmetic products, medicines, veterinary medicines etc. According to the Members of the Committee the corresponding marking should be added not only to the information concerning foodstuffs but concerning otter production that may contain GMO as well.
