On 22 March, 2022, delegates to the 144th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Nusa Dua (Indonesia) discussed the issue of "Peaceful settlement of the war in Ukraine, respect for international law, the Charter of the United Nations and territorial integrity" in an urgent procedure. .
The participants sharply condemned the russian federation's gross violation of international law as a result of full-scale aggression against Ukraine, russia's violation of international humanitarian law, war crimes against civilians, and the inadmissibility of using war in the 21st century as a means of resolving interstate issues. Representatives of parliaments around the world stressed the need to comply with the UN Charter, compliance with norms and principles of international law, including respect for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of all nations, non-interference in their internal affairs.
The urgent need to protect civilians has been stressed, and so have the arrangements of humanitarian corridors for evacuation, provision of people with basic necessities and medical care, and guarantee that international humanitarian organizations have access to places where people need help. It was noted that the war caused a real humanitarian catastrophe. The flow of refugees has amounted to more than three million people, millions more have become internally displaced persons. All participants called for an immediate end to hostilities and for negotiations aimed at restoring peace and resolving disputes through consultations.
Many participants in the debate expressed their sincere admiration for the courageous struggle of the Ukrainian people against the russian large-scale invasion, noting that today Ukraine is defending not only its own freedom, but also the freedom of the entire free democratic world.
Lesia Vasylenko, a member of the Ukrainian delegation and President of the Bureau of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spoke online during the debate. She pointed to numerous war crimes by russian invaders, such as rape, torture and murdering of civilians, destruction of civilian infrastructure, shelling of residential areas, hospitals, maternity houses, schools and daycare facilities. The representative of Ukraine stressed that our nation is ready for a peaceful settlement and negotiations, but on the condition of respect for Ukrainian sovereignty, state independence, territorial integrity within internationally recognised borders and compensation for damage caused by russian aggression.
