This was stated by Co-Chair of the Ukraine-NATO
Interparliamentary Council (UNIC) Ojars Kalnins at the meeting with
First Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk
and Chairperson of the Permanent Delegation of the Verkhovna Rada of
Ukraine to the NATO PA Yegor Chernev.
During the meeting, O. Kalnins
noted that the NATO PA was the first to establish an informal support
group for the Crimea Platform, which will be an important contribution
to consolidating the efforts of the international community to counter
Russia's aggressive policy and militarization of the Ukrainian
peninsula.
In turn, R. Stefanchuk informed the participants of the
meeting about significant progress in various areas of Euro-Atlantic
reforms, including the adoption of important legislation and guidelines
in the field of security and defense.
Yegor Chernev proposed to
identify the security situation in the Black Sea region and countering
the militarization of Crimea as one of the priority topics for
discussion at the planned UNIC meeting in Odesa on October 26-27, 2021.
He also noted the importance of involving Georgian colleagues and
representatives of other delegations in the development and
implementation of an effective deterrence strategy of the Russian
Federation.
At the end of the meeting, O. Kalnins shared the positive
experience of holding the NATO PA session in Riga, which could be
useful for Ukraine in the context of holding the 2022 meeting of the
Assembly in Kyiv.
