It is hard to imagine that not so long ago in Ukraine people died en masse from hunger, there was no access to any food. Our state has gone through the horrors of the Holodomor three times. Thousands of archival documents confirm the terrible events of those times and the incredible scale of the tragedies. The stories of those who survived the famine are so eerie that it is hard to imagine. But these stories help us understand the pain that millions of Ukrainian families have gone through.
Today we honor the memory of the victims of the three Holodomors, the tragedy that took lives of a huge number of Ukrainians in the first half of the twentieth century: in 1921–1923, 1932–1933, and in the postwar years of 1946–1947. It is our duty to preserve the memory of these victims. We also need to draw conclusions about the preconditions, causes and consequences. And to build a state in which such tragedies can never happen again.
Eternal memory!
