The Committee on Education, Science and Innovations held hearings on the topic: “Reforming legal education in Ukraine: problems and prospects.”

The purpose of the hearings was to discuss ways to reform legal education in Ukraine, define the Legal Education Development Concept and ensure its modernization, efficiency and further development.

During his speech, First Deputy Chairperson of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk stressed that legal education is a key area of higher education in Ukraine.

“In order for legal education in Ukraine to become better and more competitive on a global scale, we need to find those important ‘recipes’  that can be implemented in further activities,” Ruslan Stefanchuk said.

Chairperson of the Committee on Education, Science and Innovations Serhiy Babak noted that legal education occupies a special place in the education system of Ukraine. This is due to the role played by the legal professions in solving many problems related to the normal functioning of the state and the comprehensive protection of civil rights and freedoms. He noted that it is necessary to educate and train lawyers of the new generation, who must have all the competencies and moral and ethical qualities to build a democratic and legal state.

The Concept for the Development of Legal Education in Ukraine states that there is an excessive number of higher education institutions in Ukraine that train lawyers. It is proposed to liquidate the specialty ‘International Law’ and conduct training in the specialty ‘Law’ only for a master's degree in full-time education. The participants of the hearings noted the urgency of the issue of reforming the legal education system, bringing it closer to public needs and to the European level.
