As a founding member of the United Nations, Ukraine strictly adheres to the goals and principles of the Charter of the Organization, makes a significant contribution to its activities in the areas of international peace and security, disarmament, economic and social development, human rights and international law.

Ukraine's activity in the United Nations has been identified as one of the priorities of the country's foreign policy. Among them: development of effective approaches to strengthening international and regional security, fuller involvement of the UN in the disarmament process, reduction of military confrontation in different regions of the world, constructive dialogue on conversion issues, solving socio-economic problems, expert assistance in state building of Ukraine, the use of unique UN capabilities for dialogue with representatives of other states. The culmination of Ukraine's membership in the UN Security Council was its presidency in March 2001. That month became one of the most productive and effective in the activities of the UN Security Council, which addressed a number of the world's most pressing issues, in particular, the crisis in the Balkans and the Middle East. Countering Russian aggression, Moscow's gross violation of the principles of the modern world order based on the UN Charter, has become a key component of Ukraine's priorities and tasks in the Security Council.

In 2020, the UN celebrates its 75th anniversary. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the world has not yet been able to meet the challenge of fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic has become a major global challenge for the entire international community and for multiculturalism. The unification of the countries of the world in the desire to overcome this disease poses new global challenges to the UN.
