During his speech at the plenary session, the Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine drew a parallel between the desire for independence of the Ukrainian and Lithuanian peoples. “We, Ukrainians, understand extremely well that in the modern world to defend and restore the independence of a country with a thousand-year history was and still is a challenge. 30 years ago Lithuania fulfilled its historical mission and defended the most valuable asset of a free society - its own independent state,” noted Dmytro Razumkov. He also reminded of Ukraine's struggle for independence, which is still ongoing due to military aggression, and of the losses suffered by the Ukrainian people.
“De facto, we are still fighting for the true independence of our own state, for the right to choose our foreign policy course, for the right of Ukrainian citizens to live in a peaceful, prosperous and successful country. Before the beginning of this struggle, we were not fully aware of the value of freedom and how difficult it is to defend it,” stressed the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
The Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament also mentioned the constant support and mutual respect between Ukraine and Lithuania: in the joint trials of the past and in the face of threats that must be overcome now. Dmytro Razumkov thanked the members of the Lithuanian Parliament and stressed the importance of democratic principles that ensure the development of countries today and security – tomorrow. He noted that Lithuania's assistance in combating the challenges posed by a common adversary is an invaluable contribution that Ukraine will never forget.
The Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine expressed respect for the Lithuanian people, their achievements and principled position on issues of national interests.
“Ukraine and Lithuania have not only a common historical past, but also a common European future. Only together we will be able to achieve our goals. Lithuania has a big heart, and I am infinitely grateful that I see sincere love for Ukraine in this heart,” stressed the Speaker of Parliament.
In addition, Dmytro Razumkov together with representatives of the Seimas of Lithuania took part in the flower-laying ceremony at the Memorial to civilians killed trying to preserve Lithuania's independence in 1991 in the Antakalnis Cemetery.
