Address of the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Dmytro Razumkov on the occasion of the 34th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster
On April 26, 1986, at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, there broke out an explosion, which shook the world immensely. The Chornobyl tragedy and the elimination of its consequences are still a symbol of the self-sacrificing and admirable struggle of humans against any, oftentimes invisible, foe.
Firefighters who were the first to extinguish the fire at the fourth unit of the Chornobyl NPP. Doctors who fought for the lives of those who had received radiation sickness. Station staff, dosimetrists, soldiers, scientists, builders. Liquidators who deserve the highest respect and our boundless gratitude.
But 34 years later, addressing the aftermath of that horrific accident is still going on, and the Chornobyl zone is back in the spotlight. Fire sirens sound again, and rescuers selflessly fight for our safety. To those who are struggling today with the elements in the zone of exclusion I do wish strength and unwavering will.
The Chornobyl calamity has changed the lives of millions, and the consequences of this cataclysm will be with us for centuries to come. But I want to believe that the human has learned this lesson.
Let us not forget!
