Mykola Tomenko: A New Law "On Judicial System" should possess Legal, Political and Social Legitimacy

On Wednesday, Mykola Tomenko, Vice-Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, closed the parliamentary hearings on the topic "On the State of Justice in Ukraine". He stressed that active reference to the political parties failed to maintain the order in the judicial system.

In his speech M.Tomenko stated that a new Law "On Judicial System of Ukraine" was like a Constitution that should be characterized by the highest level of legitimacy, both political, legal, and social.

"In case the said document is adopted by votes of the majority of representatives of the judicial system, the half of parliament´s hall and misunderstanding of Ukrainian society, - it will not become a "Constitution of justice", - stated M.Tomenko.

He emphasized that judicial authorities, the President and The Verkhovna Rada were equally responsible for all the defects in the system of justice.

Eventually, the Vice-Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine stated that the parliamentary hearings aimed at determination of the strategy and the concept of reforms of the judicial system and discussion of the relevant Law, not at the debates concerning parties or The Verkhovna Rada.

"The judicial system should be protected from depoliticization. Ukraine should become a country that respects judicial system and holds the occupation of the judge as dignified and honourable", - stated M.Tomenko.
