The Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and International Relations held a Round Table Discussion concerning the Status of Men in Ukraine

20 February 2009, 12:29

The participants of the sitting discussed the issues concerning men´s life span, conditions of reproductive health, wide-spreadness of smoking and use of alcohol, drug addiction, high rate of suicide among the men, everyday-life delinquency, etc.

People´s Deputy O.Zarubinsky supposes that topicality of the matter concerning the status of men in Ukraine is conditioned by the present-day situation, when the life span of men is 10-12 years shorter than that of women, and it is men who commit suicide in 90 per cent out of the total number.

The participants of the discussion stressed that "the majority of private property objects belong to men, and big business has always been considered a men´s priority". However, the society considers men as family providers, therefore, the psychological burden of today´s unemployment is very hard for them.

To settle the matter, the Committee members deem necessary to amend the State programs in the field of gender equality, human trafficking, reproductive health; develop special measures to overcome the negative tendencies concerning the status of men.
