On Monday, within the scope of his working visit to the Russian Federation, Volodymyr Lytvyn met Sergey Mironov, Chairman of the Council of Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.
During the meeting, the Parties discussed a wide range of issues concerning Ukrainian-Russian relations, including gas supply.
V.Lytvyn deems necessary to restore activity of the Inter-Parliamentary Commission on Liaison between The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation that should define the priority issues to be discussed. V.Lytvyn suggested that the meeting of the Commission be held on 15 January 2009.
V.Lytvyn stressed that under the current complicated financial and economic conditions, the parliaments of Ukraine and Russia should permanently exchange the experience of fighting crisis at the legislative level, "find the common points, so that not to employ the method of errors".
Dwelling upon the economic constituent of Ukrainian-Russian relations, S.Mironov emphasized the importance of further growth of exchange of commodities and expected his hopes that the issue concerning gas supply to Ukraine would be settled.
Discussing the issues concerning humanitarian cooperation, the Chairman of the Council of Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation suggested that the countries provide common celebration of memorable historic dates, including the 200th anniversary of birth of M.Hohol and the 300th anniversary of Poltava Battle.
On the whole, the Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine believes that the parliaments of Ukraine and Russia should coordinate their efforts in inter-parliamentary organizations and hold consultations concerning complicated matters.
In his interview to the journalists, V.Lytvyn stated that the main goal of his visit "was to resume Ukrainian-Russian relations by parliamentary and diplomatic methods".
