Mykola Tomenko: The Law on the list of monuments of cultural heritage is a serious step towards support of Ukrainian culture.
Mykola Tomenko, Vice-Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, stated the abovementioned, commenting on adoption of the Bill "On the List of Monuments of Cultural Heritage not liable to Privatization" (Reg. No.0928) adopted at the Second Reading and in its entirety. 359 People´s Deputies from The Party of Regions, BYuT, NUNS and The Lytvyn Bloc Factions voted for the Bill.
At present, legal regulations that impose a temporary restriction on privatization of objects of cultural heritage are effective. The temporary status provoked local authorities to allow illegitimate alienation of cultural monuments and privatization of a number of objects, as well as insufficient investments.
The Vice-Chairman declared the vital importance of the Bill for Kyiv, where "activity" of the local authorities resulted in the serious destruction of certain cultural monuments. "Now, that the said Bill is endorsed and will be signed by the President, 331 objects of Kyiv and other cultural monuments all over Ukraine will be legally protected from destruction, misappropriation or privatization", - stated Mykola Tomenko.
