The Pensioners, Veterans and The Disabled Affairs Committee recommends that Parliament passes, as a basis for further discussions, the Bill on Amendments to the Law, 'On The Status and Guarantees of War Veterans' for their Social Protection' (appertaining to the mechanism of establishing War Veteran Status)

26 January 2008, 12:34

The Bill (Reg. No,1106) creates State Guarantees for the Social Protection of Senior Citizens, and in particular those over 89 years old.

There are 876,000 such citizens living in Ukraine, which makes 6% of the total amount of pensioners.

The Bill envisages the introduction, as of the date of the Law´s publication, of a simplified mechanism for granting War Participant status, according to the Law of Ukraine, 'On the Status and Guarantees of War Veterans' for their Social Protection', to those persons who are unable, for valid reasons, to submit documents confirming their work record during the War, and who were born no later than 2 September 1927. This status will be granted upon a submission by the relevant Commissions, on the grounds of a written application only, in which these persons must provide details of their work record during the War.

For this purpose, and for the purpose of improvement in legislation on the Social Protection of Senior Citizens, the Law, 'On The Status and Guarantees of War Veterans' for their Social Protection', should be amended, stressed Committee Members.

The Passing of this Bill will allow the simplification of the mechanism for granting War Participant status to the said citizens, on the basis of their applications only, and will contribute to the renovation of social justice.
