The Committee on Environmental Policy, Use of Natural Resources and Elimination of Consequences of Chornobyl Disaster upholds the Bill on Amendments to several Laws of Ukraine (re Regulation of Social Protection of People that reside in the Monitoring Areas of Enterprises that extract Uranic Ores, and manufacture Nuclear Facilities and Units related to Nuclear Waste Treatment)

26 May 2008, 12:35

The Bill (Reg. No. 2174) regulates financial and economic relations as to obligation of operating organization to comply with the regulations of the Law "On the Use of Nuclear Energy and Radiation Safety". The said regulations appertain to enhancement of living and labour conditions of the citizens that reside in the areas of enterprises that extract uranic ores, and manufacture nuclear facilities and units related to nuclear waste treatment.

At present, Ukraine lacks the mechanisms for implementing legal regulations in order to secure the rights of citizens who reside in relevant areas.

Social and economic risk compensation for the residents in the monitoring areas will be funded at the expense of a newly-established special fund of the State Budget of Ukraine.
