Olena Bondarenko, the Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Internationally Legal Issues and Gender Policy, stated that qualitative changes in the development of democracy, economic power, social security, settlement of demographic and numerous social issues depend on the investment into person´s development. "In view of different needs and possibilities of men and women, the said investment should be differentiated on the gender basis. Investment into the development of girls and women is important in view of humanitarian and economic prospects, and renders the opportunity for the society to leap ahead in its development", - stated the People´s Deputy.
The issue of gender inequality remains urgent in Ukrainian society. One citizen of Ukraine out of two acknowledges gender inequality in the society. Moreover, 62 per cent of population believe that women´s rights are restricted.
The rapporteurs underscored that global aims of development, adopted at the UNO Millennium Summit, include achievement of gender equality till Year 2015. Ukraine shares the said goals, and aims at achievement of gender-balanced representation of men and women in legislative and supreme executive branches of power. The attendants of the meeting also called for enhanced efforts of public institutions aimed at provision of women´s rights in the social and economic spheres of life, and for increased number of women in the public authority bodies.
